AI Gait Analysis is a Game Changer for Movement Professionals

By Dr. Spencer Lalk

Recently, I integrated AI into my practice, and the insights gained have revolutionized how I customize exercise programs.

Gait analysis involves evaluating the way an individual walks or runs to identify potential issues in their movement patterns.

My running clients have been impressed with my transition from visual gait analysis to AI running analysis.

Kinotek uses AI to capture valuable information on a client’s running form with a 3D body scan.

Here’s the cool part…

Customizing my exercise programs
has become so much easier.

Analyzing Kinotek’s gait analysis data, I noticed two significant areas of concern in my client's gait:

Lumbopelvic Drop

Lumbopelvic drop refers to an excessive tilt or shift of the pelvis during movement, often leading to lower back issues and inefficient biomechanics. To address this, I designed a customized exercise program incorporating eccentric step downs. This exercise helps functional strength by targeting the muscles around the hips, preventing the lumbopelvic drop and promoting a more stable core.

Increased Hip Adduction

Increased hip adduction, where the hip moves towards the midline of the body excessively, can lead to poor alignment and potential injury. To combat this, I incorporated lateral banded walks into the exercise regimen. This targeted exercise improves hip stability and reinforces proper hip alignment during movement.

Why deep, AI-driven gait analysis important?

By using AI to identify, visualize and quantify these specific gait abnormalities, I gained deeper insights and was able to craft exercise programs tailored precisely to my client's needs.  In addition, I established an objective baseline that lets me measure progress.

This is personalized care at its best!

As a physical therapist, I focus on corrective exercises, but now with the help of advanced technology for range of motion assessments, personal trainers and other movement professionals can gain these deeper insights too.

In my opinion, there will be one of two types of movement professionals moving forward:

Those who embrace fitness technology to enhance insights, standardize, and scale their business…

…and those who stick to their gut feeling and visual assessments.
